Topic: Advances in Mite and Small Hive Beetle Management and Control
Lilia de Guzman is a Research Entomologist at the USDA, ARS, Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics
and Physiology Laboratory in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She has studied varroa and tracheal mite
resistance of Yugoslavian and Russian honey bees. She led research on the mechanisms of
resistance to varroa mites by Russian honey bees, and biology and control of small hive beetles.
She is in interested in developing new tools for the selective breeding of honey bees that resist
varroa through grooming. She has also done some research on other parasitic mites such
as Tropilaelaps, Euvarroa and external Acarapis. She is currently investigating the effects of
varroa mite parasitism on bee behavior.
